Boston College loses in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

January 1, 1940

B.C. loses to Clemson 6-3 in the Cotton Bowl. The Eagles play without halfback “Hulu” Lou Montgomery, the school’s first African-American player. According to the Boston Globe, the junior from Brockton, remained in Boston and “declined the Southern trip so that he wouldn’t embarrass his teammates . . . because of an old Southern custom” (the refusal of Southern schools to play against teams with black players). The bowl game is one of six games – home as well as away – that Montgomery sat out in last two seasons.
